American immigrants from Sternberg Brandenburg Recently I ordered microfilms for Waldau, Flatow, West Prussia and found three Koberstein records. This is the birth location I found for Ernest R. below (Family Search: L77S-RBM). Here are the records I found. Item No. 13 - Hermann Koberstein was born to August and Emilie nee Koberstein Koberstein. The very unusual thing her is that Emilie had the maiden name (nee) of Koberstein and married August Koberstein. He was born at Dammbusch, Sternberg, Brandenburg, Prussia. At this website you can see its location with modern Polish name. He died on March 29, 1882 at Waldau, Flatlow, West Prussia at the age of ten (this age may need better translation). Calculated birth year would be 1872. |
This location is on my website near Koltchen.
Mother: Emilie nee Koberstein
Item No. 47 Martha Emilie Elizabeth Koberstein was born to Heinrich and Emilie nee Wurfel Koberstein. She was born at Waldauk Flatau Kreis on September 25, 1881. She is a part of the ernst family line in the Koberstein surname website. She is the daughter of Henry (americanized form of Heinrich) William Koberstein and Amelia Augusta Werfel. This record is another link with both families being in Waldau at about the same time frame. and imigrating to Nebraska (although they were in Illinois for a short while before taking up permanent residence in Nebraska. Martha is KZV5-CCQ in Family Search.
This couple immigrated to America along with three of their children Anna, August, and Ernst in 1888 landing at Baltimore MD on the ship Hermann.
As another connection of this family to Sternberg I found that the birth location of Emilie of Hammerwiesen is also near Koltchen. |

I have only known this family living in North Dakota and Corvallis Oregon area. However in the Newspaper obituary for Emilie we read, “The couple came to American in the fall of 1888 and first made their home at Hasting, Nebraska. In 1889 they moved to Corvallis. Nine children were born to the couple and four of them died in infancy. The survivors are three sons, Gustav and Ernest of Corvallis, and August, of Seattle, and two daughters, Mrs Ida Keehn of Philomath and Mrs. Anna Norris of Seattle.” This living in Hasting, Nebraska suggests a relationship with another family who had their second child born in that location.
Paula Antonia Hoffman born on 16 APR 1862 at Lansberg, Germany (again believed to be Landsberg (Gorzow Wielkopolsk)
As per the 1910 census the parents both immigrated in 1880. A note from Alice Gibson (granddaughter of Ernst Wilhelm Koberstein) stated, “He emmigrated from Bremen, Germany and arrived at the port of Baltimore, MD May 15, 1880” So here is a THEORY of this connnection, I propose the H. Karl Koberstein is the common ancestor of both groups. He is know to be the oldest known person in the Nebraska Ernst family line, whereas the person of similar age in the Oregon/North Dakota branch is unknown. If they were the same this would be the connection in Koltschen. I the web page forKoltschen there is a Karl listed but the residence date is 1870 which could be given H. Karl's birth date of 1820 he would have been 50 during this record, many members of both families are listed in Koltschen and just a bit further north and over the rive in Landsberg. So of the children moved up to Waldau, Kreis Flatow, Brandenberg before immigating to America. We need more records to prove this theory. |
Here is a modern map of the migration from Dammbusch (Dębokierz in poland) and Hammerwiesen, northeast of Koltschen (Kołczyn in poland), (near Łąków in modern poland) near Koltschen (Kołczyn in poland) and Landsberg (Gorzów Wielkopolski in poland) to Gross Lossburg and Waldau (Wlosciborz and Wałdowo in poland) both of which are near Zempleburg, West Prussia (Sepolina Krajenskie in poland)

Karl H. Koberstein and Minnie Mary Fricka Koberstein apparently didn’t immigrate to America but his two sons did below. There is a third proposed son that is Gustav and may be the family that immigrated to North Dakota.
